More settled weather has been forecast by Met Éireann this week, following the high winds and torrential rain of recent days.

Some areas received a month's allocation of rain over the weekend, according to John Eagleton of Met Éireann. While gusts of up to 100km/hr blew down election posters and took branches from trees, the wind was not exceptional and did not break records, he said.

Tomorrow looks like being the best day of the week, with the rain holding off until late in the day.

Intermittent showers are expected for the rest of the week, and it seems that the west will get brunt of the wet conditions next weekend.

Snow fell in high ground in the north west today, but Met Éireann said it was not the start of another cold snap.

The inclement weekend weather was blamed for a number of incidents, including the collapse of a 200-year-old section of quay wall beside Ringsend bridge in Dublin. A gust of wind also caused an aircraft to move and separate from an air bridge connecting to the terminal at Dublin airport, but nobody was hurt in the incident.

The passengers had begun disembarking from Aer Lingus flight EI235 from Gatwick, London, on Friday when the incident happened.

Sporting events around the country were cancelled, including yesterday's Leopardstown meeting. Motorists have been advised to exercise caution on the roads because of localised flooding.
