A Sligo man was found guilty by a jury at the Central Criminal Court last night of having sexual intercourse with his sister on two occasions when she was a young girl.

The jury of six women and six men took almost three hours to return unanimous verdicts after a two-day trial.

The 40-year-old man had denied having unlawful carnal knowledge of his sister, who is now a 29-year-old mother of four, on two occasions from October 1978, to May 1981.

Mr Justice Geoghegan remanded the defendant in continuing custody to July 18th when a date will be fixed for the sentence hearing.

Mr Michael Durack SC, prosecuting, said the man is already awaiting sentence after he pleaded guilty earlier this month to 11 charges of indecently assaulting the victim and two other females on dates from 1974 to 1986.

During the trial, the defendant gave evidence and admitted indecently assaulting his sister but denied raping her.
