Skerries in north Co Dublin has been named as having the best railway station in the State.

The station took the Best Overall category at the 2000 Waterford Crystal-sponsored Iarnród Éireann Best Station Awards held in Dublin today.

Chosen from over 130 across the country, the busy commuter station received a Waterford Crystal sculpture of an Iarnród Éireann locomotive as part of its prize.

This is the first time Skerries has won the main award but it also won the Best Suburban Halt award for the fifth year running.

The competition rewards excellence in customer facilities and service, cleanliness and innovation in the country's railway stations.

Kent Station in Cork won the Heritage Award for their Railway Museum; Rosslare Europort won the Best Major Station Award; Sutton won the Best Dart Station Award; and Kilkenny won the Best Fastrack Award.
