CHANDIGARH - A Sikh party took power in India's farming state of Punjab yesterday, after a sweeping local election victory on a pledge of peace and development.

About 30,000 cheering supporters of the Akali Dal and the Hindu nationalist Bharatiyn, Janatu Party (BJP) thronged a sports stadium in the state capital of Chandigarh as Mr Prakash Singh Badal wash sworn in as chief minister.
