Police were today investigating reports of shots being fired during more overnight trouble in north Belfast.

The shots are said to have been fired and a gunman seen on the street after homes and cars were attacked in the Cliftondene area.

Several homes had windows smashed and houses and cars had paint thrown over them, said police. The attacks came after loyalist flags erected in the area earlier in the week were removed.

Inspector Jim Chapman of the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) appealed for calm discussion to resolve the dispute.

"Talking and trying to resolve issues such as this by getting together is the best way," he said.

"It is too easy at a time of year like this for people to take action into their own hands and cause problems.

"I would appeal that we get people from both sides of the community to talk and discuss this and try to get a result without any more problems than we already have."
