Ships set weather reports record

Two ships from Cork have set an Irish weather reporting record, according to Met Eireann. The Seahorse Supplier and Seahorse Supporter have made weather reports and transmitted them to Met Eireann's forecasting office in Dublin every six hours for the last five years. By doing so they provided continuous observation from a single area that has been unequalled in length and dependability since the departure of the Light vessels in 1982, Met Eireann said.

The two vessels are safety and supply ships to the Marathon gas platform off Kinsale. Met Eireann's director, Mr Declan Murphy, said with the recent end to observations from manned lighthouses, reports from ships at sea are especially useful.
