London - Serial killer Harold Shipman was yesterday struck off the medical register and banned from practising as a doctor after being found guilty of serious professional misconduct by the General Medical Council, Shipman, who is serving a life sentence after being convicted of murdering 15 of his women patients while working as a GP, was suspended with immediate effect by the GMC's professional conduct committee.

The hearing had been speeded up by the GMC in the wake of Shipman's conviction on Monday of last week.
