Sellafield is to face nine charges for dumping low-level radioactive waste at a landfill in Cumbria two years ago, following a decision to prosecute by the Environment Agency and the UK Office for Nuclear Regulation.

The case, which follows a lengthy investigation by both agencies into allegations of unauthorised dumping, will come before Workington Magistrates Court in Cumbria next month.

Last night, the nuclear reprocessing plant’s operators, Sellafield Ltd, said: “We now need to take the time to consider the information provided to us by the agencies. As this matter is subject to proceedings, we are unable to comment further at this stage.”
