An injured crewman has been rescued by Valentia Coastguard and airlifted to Cork Regional Hospital after he was injured aboard an Irish fishing trawler off the Cork coast. A second operation off the West coast is also under way this morning.

Repeated efforts by Valentia Coastguard to airlift the Spanish fisherman from the Scelig Dawnwere unsuccessful last night as high winds off the Cork coast made the operation treacherous.

However, early this morning a Coastguard lifeboat succeeded in pulling alongside the Scelig Dawn, taking the injured man aboard. He was brought to Castletownbere where the Coastguard helicopter airlifted the man to hospital. He is suffering from a broken leg.

Meanwhile, a sea rescue operation involving Malin Coastguard is ongoing this morning off the west coast. Further details to follow.
