Royal Bank of Scotland, Britain's second-biggest bank, said today it expected possible alliances and joint ventures in the future rather than big bank mergers or acqusitions.

Chief executive Mr Fred Goodwin said the bank did not need to carry out another big acquisition at this stage after it bought NatWest last year.
