WASHINGTON - The Gulf War commander, Gen Norman Schwarzkopf, yesterday vehemently denounced as a "blatant lie" charges that he and his commanders covered up exposure of US troops to Iraqi chemical weapons.

Gen Schwarzkopf told a Senate panel looking into unexplained Gulf War illnesses that every chemical alarm that sounded during the war was checked out and proved to be a false alarm.
