Forty-one people were killed and 27 others injured today when a school building collapsed in the eastern Chinese province of Jiangxi, state media reported.

The collapse of the two-storey primary school building in Wanzai county, about 700 kilometres southwest of Shanghai, was caused by an explosion.

A total of 29 bodies had been recovered from the rubble of four classrooms destroyed in the blast, Xinhua said, adding 41 people had been confirmed killed. Some of the dead were school teachers, it said.

Wanzai fire brigade and police arrived on the scene to join in the rescue operation tonight. The 27 injured were in local hospitals, the news agency said.
