GARDAI have described the murder of Veronica Guerin as a "savage and dreadful crime" and said they will make every effort to bring her killers to justice.
They are appealing to anyone, who may have witnessed the murder at the junction of the Naas Road and Boot Road to come forward with information.
Ms Guerin was killed just before, I p.m. when two men on a motorcycle pulled up beside her car which was stopped at traffic lights and, opened fire, hitting her some six times in the chest and upper body.
It is believed that she died instantly.
Speaking at a Garda Press conference in Lucan yesterday, Supt Bryan O'Higgins described her murder as "cold, callous planned".
The killers were both in white crash helmets. The motorcycle, which was also white, was described as "powerful" and bore the registration number 89D 4823 or 89D 4923.
It is not clear if her attackers followed her from Naas, Co Kildare, where she had appeared in court on a speeding summons yesterday morning.
Ms Guerin was driving a red Opel Calibra car, registration number 91 KE 2645. The car was in the middle lane at the Green Isle hotel junction.
The Garda press conference was told that no one had been arrested or charged in relation to the previous shooting of Ms Guerin last year. Nor had anyone been charged with an earlier incident when shots were fired through her sitting room, window.
Ms Guerin had a protection arrangement with local gardai. "She would have been aware that she was at risk," he added. He did not know if she had recently received threats from Dublin criminals.
