The amount of salt in popular breakfast cereals has fallen by as much as 57 per cent in the last eight years as part of an industry initiative developed by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland.

The authority established its salt reduction programme in conjunction with the food industry in 2003 and in a report published yesterday it said the average daily intake by adults had fallen by 1.1g per day in the last decade. It said the salt content in white bread had been reduced by up to 18 per cent.
