Lydenburg - A South African magistrate yesterday handed down a six-year jail sentence to the driver of a bus which crashed in 1999, killing 27 elderly British tourists.

The magistrate, Mr Andries Lambrecht, said the bus driver, Titus Dube, was "grossly negligent" when the bus crashed on a winding mountain road in September 1999, killing the tourists and their South African tour guide.

"This case cannot be dismissed with a mere slap on the wrist . . . because of the demand for justice here and abroad," Mr Lambrecht said. Dube was granted leave to appeal the ruling and was released on 500 rand ($61) bail.)
