Kigali - Rwanda's worst outbreak of fighting for years intensified yesterday when the army killed more than 100 Hutu rebels in a fierce all-day battle, a senior army officer said.

More than a thousand rebels clashed with the army in some of the heaviest fighting since violence began in mid-May when a group of militiamen crossed into Rwanda from the Democratic Republic of Congo, the officer said.
