An RUC officer sustained head injuries after police and loyalists clashed in Portadown, Co Armagh, on Monday night.

An RUC officer sustained head injuries after police and loyalists clashed in Portadown, Co Armagh, on Monday night.

Police in Portadown said trouble flared after RUC officers went to remove burning barriers placed across the main Dungannon road close to the town's loyalist Corcrain estate. Around 70 youths were involved in dismantling a bonfire and spreading material across the road before setting it alight. RUC officers were attacked each time they attempted to clear the road.
