RUC investigate murder of west Belfast man

The man at the centre of an RUC murder investigation in west Belfast was this evening named as Mr David McDowell.

Mr McDowell, (34), was from Battenburg Street, close to the scene of the killing.

His body was found on a footpath at the junction of Shankill Road and Lanark Way this morning.

An RUC spokesman said that the man had suffered head wounds and a post mortem has been arranged.

The RUC has appealed to anyone around the Shankill Road and Lanark Way area between 3.30 a.m. and 4 a.m. to contact them.

The spokesman said a motive had not yet been established.

Meanwhile two men are in hospital after being wounded in separate gun attacks in west Belfast last night.

One man was shot in an ankle at Vere Foster Walk at about 10.40 last night.

The other man was shot in both ankles. He was found at Norglen Parade at 8.30 p.m.

On the outskirts of Belfast a Catholic church was targeted by arsonists last night causing scorch damage. St Peter's The Rock church in Stoneyford near Lisburn was attacked at midnight.
