A COUNTY Cavan roads campaigner, Martin Hannigan (53), who was prosecuted for painting yellow circles around potholes on roads in the region “to alert drivers of the dangers” had the charges adjourned at yesterday’s sitting of the District Court in Cootehill.

Mr Hannigan, a father of six, with an address at Shercock Road, Cootehill, Co Cavan, was charged with causing obstruction by erecting a temporary road sign to indicate the painting of potholes was in progress on a roadway in Cootehill on August 18th last year, and also for allegedly “defacing” the road surface by painting.

Prior to the court sitting earlier yesterday the Co Cavan man painted a number of signs on the roadway outside Cootehill Courthouse, to “highlight” his campaign.

When the case was called yesterday, the State sought an adjournment until next month’s sitting for the purpose of an adult caution being administered by gardaí to Mr Hannigan and this was granted by Judge Seán MacBride.

Outside the court, Mr Hannigan said: “I am very disappointed that the case did not go ahead. Somebody obviously wanted to prevent the issue getting publicity.

“But I intend to keep up my campaign to ensure that the roads throughout Co Cavan are improved.”
