The number of people killed on roads in the State has fallen by 28 per cent compared with the same period last year, according to the National Safety Council.

The council said 76 people died on roads in the State this year, compared to 106 between January 1st and April 4th in 2002.

The penalty points system, introduced in the Republic on October 31st, was credited with reducing road deaths.
