About 200 people from the Santry area marched along the M1 to Whitehall yesterday to protest against Dublin Corporation's proposal to construct a tunnel at Marino to bring traffic to the port.
The port tunnel has been the subject of much controversy in the past year, and many residents have objected to what they describe as the lack of consultation about the project.
However, Dublin Corporation insists there has been full consultation and that residents and their representatives have been fully informed of every move relating to the tunnel to date.
The Green Party candidate in the Dublin North by-election, Mr Paul Martin, who took part in the protest march, said: "It is not acceptable to the people of Santry or the wider community to haul 8,000 heavy goods vehicles through the county every day.
"Already residents along the proposed tunnel route have called for its rejection, claiming that the noise of the traffic beneath their homes will still be heard and that will greatly devalue their homes."
He said the people of Whitehall were successful in their case against the entrance of the tunnel in their area on respiratory health grounds.
"The people of Fingal equally value their health."
