Gardaí have launched a fresh appeal into a shooting in which two men were wounded in Finglas two weeks ago.
Gardaí in Cabra investigating the shooting of Anthony and Ciarán McDonagh, are seeking witnesses to the incident which occurred at 9.10am on Thursday July 15th on the River Road, between Finglas and Ashtown, Co Dublin.
Detective Superintendent Walter O’Sullivan said the two men came under fire from a lone gunman as they sat in their white Ford van after stopping at what they believed were road works.
He said a man standing in the roadway wearing a high visibility vest walked over to the van and started firing. Anthony McDonagh was hit a number of times and as Ciarán McDonagh tried to run for safety he too was shot.
The gunman then left the scene and walked down River Road in the direction of Finglas.
“This is a stretch of roadway that connects Finglas to the Ashtown and Blanchardstown areas and there was a line of traffic back from the scene of the attack,” Det Supt O’Sullivan said appealing to motorists to come forward with information.
“Perhaps they saw the gunman walk down the road, perhaps they saw him get into a motor vehicle or some other item of transport, perhaps they saw him being assisted in some way.”
Det Supt O’Sullivan also said a 98-D green Mazda 626 was set alight a short distance from the attack at a county council bottle bank on the Ballyboggan Road. He said a number of people were seen running from the area and appealed for information.
Gardaí are also keen to speak to anyone who might have information regarding a beige-Toyota Corolla stolen the week before the attack. The car, registration number 94-D-10153, was stolen from the Glasnevin area on July 8th and gardaí are seeking information regarding its movements in the days before the attack.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Cabra gardaí on 016667432 or 016667400.
Det Supt O’Sullivan said Anthony McDonagh remains in Beaumont hospital “struggling for his life”. Ciarán McDonagh has since been released from hospital.
