An Englishman who allegedly held his wife hostage in Oughterard, Co Galway, last Friday night before surrendering to gardai, was remanded in custody with consent to bail, when he appeared before Galway District Court yesterday.

Mr Ian Raymond Weston (55), who has also used the names Mark Adams, Tom Adams and Padraig Conroy, since he moved to Ireland two years ago, is charged with falsely imprisoning Ms Bridie Conroy at Carrowmanagh, Oughterard, on July 13th. He is also charged with possession of an air rifle with intent to resist arrest.

Mr Weston will appear before the court again on July 23rd.
