A full recheck of the 6,344 votes cast in the Longford Electoral area in the contest for seats on Longford county council began at 10am to decide which of the two sitting Fianna Fáil councillors in the area will lose their seat.
Only 22 votes separated Seamus Butler and Denis Glennon early this morning with Mr Glennon destined to take the seat.
However, Seamus Butler sought a recount of the papers and eventually a recheck was agreed which began this morning at 10am and is expected to continue through the day.
The outcome of the recheck will not change the make up of the new council where Fine Gael has dropped one seat and are now down to 10 from their 11 last time out. Fianna Fáil have eight seats and there are three independents, including a former Fianna Fáil activist, Mark Casey, who stood as an independent and took a Fine Gael seat in the Ballymahon area.
