A dissident republican inmate in a Northern Ireland jail has been seriously assaulted by loyalist prisoners.

Three men attacked and beat the victim in a recreation room at Maghaberry Prison, Co Down.

He was treated in hospital for head and hand injuries following the assault in the non-segregated jail.

Notorious loyalist commander Johnny "Mad Dog" Adair is imprisoned at Maghaberry.

Ms Marian Price, chair of the Irish Republican Prisoners' Welfare Association, said urgent action was needed to separate the rival inmates.

"It's just a matter of time before someone is going to get killed," she said.

"We have been calling for segregation, sticking loyalists and republicans together when they can't live together on the outside just isn't sensible."
