The Horse Whisperer by Nicholas Evans was one of those books that just hung around the top of the best-seller list like it had nowhere else to go. Usually these books end up as poor films (Miss Smilla's Feeling For Snow, for example) which don't come anywhere near the standard of the original novel. However, advance notices for Robert Redford's film of The Horse Whisperer seem to indicate that it is about to break the mould and be a good film, too. Certainly the cast is strong enough - Redford himself stars opposite Kristen Scott Thomas (The English Patient) and young newcomer Scarlett Johansson. The premiere in Ireland will be on August 26th and Buena Vista has nominated the Rape Crisis Centre as the charity to benefit from the night. Fundraiser Annie Gallagher is already hard at work planning a night out that will include the film as well as a swinging country and western party at the RDS.
