Raiders escape with cash in Tuam bank raid

Raiders escaped with an undisclosed sum of money in a bank raid on an AIB branch in Tuam, Co Galway this afternoon.

Raiders escaped with an undisclosed sum of money in a bank raid on an AIB branch in Tuam, Co Galway this afternoon.

A Garda spokeswoman said two men, one armed with a knife, entered a bank on Vicar Street at around 2.30pm.

She could not confirm whether there were any customers present. However, it is understand that one of the raiders jumped over the counter and took a sum of money. The Garda spokeswoman said it had not yet been established how much money was taken.

The raiders escaped in a green MG Rover convertible car, which was found crashed about seven or eight miles away on the Dublin road at Ballindarg.

One of the men is described as 5' 10", wearing a blue top with jeans and runners and a fisherman's cap. The second man is smaller and unshaven. Both are said to be in their late 20s or early 30s. Neither of them wore a mask in the raid.

Meanwhile, the Garda has received reports of a second raid at Clara Laragh in Wicklow this afternoon. No further information was immediately available.
