Ms Kennedy worked for a number of newspapers including The Irish Times and the Sunday Tribune before she was elected a TD in 1987, representing the Progressive Democrats in Dún Laoghaire.

She returned to journalism in 1989, becoming political editor of The Irish Times in 1999 and editor in 2002.

Mr Keane began his reporting career with the Limerick Leader and Chronicle before moving to the Irish Press.

He joined RTÉ in 1984 and later the BBC, for which he has reported from several continents.

In 1996 he was awarded an OBE in Britain for his services to journalism. He is also the author of several books including Season of Blood and Letter to Daniel.

Lord Bragg - formerly Melvyn Bragg - began his career as writer, journalist and broadcaster in 1961.
