Oil and gas exploration firm Providence Resources today issued an update on its activities in the Gulf of Mexico.

The company said it had recommenced oil production from its Ship Shoal 253 field following the completion of hurricane repairs to the facility.

"This is a welcome boost to oil production at a time when oil prices are trading in the $65 to $70/bbl price range," said chief executive Tony O'Reilly.

Providence also said it had confirmed a well recompletion programme for 2010 has been agreed on for the High Island A-268 and Main Pass 19 fields.

"Providence continues to optimise its asset portfolio through recompletes of existing wellbores, as well as looking at new opportunities in the region," Mr O'Reilly said.
