Madrid - Spaniards mounted a wave of protests yesterday against the latest killing blamed on the Basque separatist group ETA, as politicians suspended campaigning for Basque elections to voice their condemnation.

Manuel Gimenez Abad, president of Spain's ruling Popular Party in the northeastern Aragon region, was gunned down in the city of Zaragoza on Sunday as he walked with his 16-year-old son to a soccer match. It was the first assassination linked to ETA since March 20th, and Spanish officials said the attack was clearly timed to intimidate Basque voters ahead of regional elections.
