More than 500 people have marched through the Co Mayo town of Ballina today in support of five men jailed over their protests at the installation of a gas pipeline over lands in Co Mayo.

The men have now been in jail for 16 days.

Yesterday, before the High Court, the men refused to purge their contempt of a previous court order restraining obstruction with works for the installation of the pipeline.

The men claim the works underway by Shell E & P Ireland are not in accordance with existing ministerial consents. The company insists they are.
