Zurich - Activists yesterday ended a 24-hour occupation of Zurich Protestant cathedral in protest against the Swiss government's immigration policies and to show solidarity with the city's illegal immigrants. The protest passed off without incident while other solidarity demonstrations took place elsewhere in Switzerland.

The protest movement has called on the government to provide residence papers for a group of illegal immigrants in Zurich, and also wants a new immigration policy which will not force people into illegal status.
