A research programme aimed at alleviating world hunger will make a difference in the fight against hunger and will incorporate an "action research" on the ground, the chief executive of Concern said yesterday.

Announcing details of the initiative at the Royal Irish Academy in Dublin, Tom Arnold said the "very exciting" initiative would utilise his organisation's extensive experience.

This would in turn be translated into significant policy change at both a national and international level, he said.

Under the plans, Concern has joined the Washington-based International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and the Kerry Group in a bid to develop new policies and solutions.

The Kerry Group has contributed €500,000 towards funding a three-year research programme.

At the launch, Dr Joachim von Braun, director of IFPRI said it was "very concerned" about the current world food situation.

He cautioned against current "ambitious plans" in Europe and North America in relation to the production of biofuels.
