A prisoner in Mountjoy jail is seeking release or transfer to another prison because he claims that he could recontract infectious TB, the High Court was told yesterday.

Edward Skeffington claims he contracted TB last year and that his illness had been caused solely, or been contributed to, by the conditions of his detention.

A doctor who examined him said in a report last March he was unlikely to contract TB again bless he was exposed to infectious TB in future.

There are still prisoners in Mountjoy with infectious TB, Skeffington claims. He further claims his continuing detention at Mountjoy is injurious to his health.

Mr Justice Kelly granted Skeffington leave to seek an inquiry into the grounds for his detention.
