A man serving 20 years for rape is to be sentenced next month for raping another sex offender in a prison cell in 1996.

In February, Anthony Cawley (31), pleaded guilty before Mr Justice O'Higgins to the rape of a 27-year-old remand prisoner in Arbour Hill Prison, Dublin, on September 24th, 1996. The victim was later jailed for six years after he admitted an unrelated rape offence.

When Cawley's case was called in the Central Criminal Court yesterday, Mr Justice Carney was told Mr Justice O'Higgins would be available to deal with the case on May 5th.

Cawley, who is being held in Wheatfield Prison, Dublin, is serving a 20-year sentence imposed by Dublin Circuit Criminal Court in 1987 for raping a woman and for robbery. He also received a concurrent 10-year term in the Central Criminal Court for attempted murder.
