A prisoner has been found dead in a holding cell at Cloverhill Courthouse in west Dublin.

A prisoner has been found dead in a holding cell at Cloverhill Courthouse in west Dublin.

Shane Rogers (32) of Deery Terrace, Inniskeen, Co Monaghan, was found dead in his cell at lunchtime.

He had been on suicide watch during his detention at Cloverhill and foul play is not suspected.

Rogers handed himself in to Carrickmacross Garda station after the shooting dead of James Hughes, the All-Ireland club medal-winning captain of Crossmaglen Rangers, from Co Armagh in the early hours of Sunday last in Dundalk.

Mr Hughes, who was a father of three, was a passenger in a taxi when he was shot. His friend Patricia Byrne and taxi driver Anthony Callan were also injured in the attack when the cab pulled up outside Ms Byrne's house.

Rogers was arrested and charged with murdering Mr Hughes at Carrickmacross Garda station on Monday December 11th

“We can confirm an inmate has died in custody,” a spokesman said. “As in all deaths in custody the Irish Prison Service and An Garda Siochana will be investigating it.”
