Nearly 200 of the prison officers at Limerick prison have availed of counselling services since an attack on a senior officer at the prison. Mr Alan Kavanagh (40), married with three children, received 65 stitches in the face and neck after he was attacked by three inmates over a week ago.

He was held down by two attackers while the third man slashed him with blades concealed in a toothbrush handle. Three prisoners were arrested and returned to Limerick prison after questioning by gardai. They were held under Section 40 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.
