A single hull tanker has been detained in Dublin Port after a litany of faults was discovered by the Maritime Safety Directorate (MSD).

The 2,663 tonne Comoros-flagged vessel the Anastasios IVwas inspected last Thursday and will remain in Dublin until all 38 deficiencies are rectified.

Inspectors found, among other problems, the ship's onboard International Safety Management system was broken down, fire detection systems were defective, and an emergency fire pump was defective. The vessel was carrying molasses.

In November a similar but larger vessel, the Prestigesank off the coast of Spain, causing widespread ecological damage to the Spanish and French coastlines.

The MSD was made aware of the Anastasios IVby the European Union black-list of ships published after the Prestigedisaster.
