A initial post mortem has confirmed Seamus O'Toole (22) who was found at the entrance to an apartment in Catherine Place, Limerick city, late on Tuesday night died from stab wounds.
The examination by the deputy State pathologist, Dr Maire Cassidy, found multiple stab wounds to the upper body was the cause of death.
Gardaí are still trying to establish a motive for the attack on Mr O'Toole, from Emly Road, Hospital, Co Limerick, which they said appears to have been unprovoked.
Anyone who was in Catherine Place between 11 p.m. Tuesday night and 12.30 a.m. Wednesday morning has been asked to contact the gardaí.
