A 25-year-old man from Derry appeared at Chelmsford Magistrates' Court in Essex yesterday charged with possessing items connected with the commission, preparation or instigation of an act of terrorism.

Mr Thomas Mellon, of Crudmore Gardens, Creggan, Derry, was charged under the Prevention of Terrorism Act that between February 17th and February 28th this year he possessed identification in the name of Mr David Bruce, in connection with Nene University in Northampton.

He was remanded in custody until March 12th.
