LONDON – British defence secretary Liam Fox’s position continues to hang by a thread, , as top British officials questioned his friend and former flat-mate Adam Werrity about inappropriate contacts between the two since Mr Fox took up office in May 2010.

Mr Werrity visited Mr Fox at the ministry of defence up to 40 times and joined him on 20 foreign visits, where he sat in on meetings even though he had no security clearance. Last night it emerged his flights bill alone could have amounted to £100,000. So far, it is not clear how Mr Werrity afforded the business trips, but the discovery of links to a military contractor, for example, could prove fatal to the career of Mr Fox.

Last night, there were unconfirmed reports that Mr Werrity has links with the Sri Lankan government.
