A police officer was injured during sectarian rioting in north Belfast last night.

A police officer was injured during sectarian rioting in north Belfast last night.

Rival Protestant and Catholic mobs attacked police lines with petrol bombs and fireworks as trouble flared at the flashpoint Limestone Road and Halliday's Road in intersection.

The officer was hit on the back of the neck by a brick, but his injuries are not serious.

The area has seen some of the worst rioting in north Belfast over the past 12 months. There had been a period of calm, but renewed clashes began over the past few nights.

Protestant community worker Mr Eddie McClean said: "We have to find a way of getting peace and stability in this area. This community is at boiling point.

"The frustration is being taken out on the security force at present here and the nationalists have got to play their part".
