A pioneer of cataract surgery Prof Eric Arnott died on Thursday at his home, aged 82. He was the son of Sir Robert Arnott of Lucan, Co Dublin, and a graduate of Trinity College Dublin.

He practised in Britain and is credited with pioneering small-incision surgery and performing the first modern phaco surgery in Europe.

His father was an agriculture correspondent and director of The Irish Times, while his brother, John Robert Arnott, was a former London editor of The Irish Times.

He married Veronica Mary Langue in 1960 and they had three children, Stephen, Tatiana and Robert.

A family funeral service will take place in Hampshire, England, with a memorial service at Lincoln’s Inn to be announced later.
