The model, famous for her ever changing hairstyle, is the first Face since English actress Helena Bonham Carter who stepped down from a £500,000 deal because of conflicts with her acting schedule.

Bill Monroe, the mandolin playing father of bluegrass music, died at a nursing home yesterday, the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee, said. He was 84. Monroe bad suffered a stroke in March but the cause of death was not immediately known.

Monroe was born in Rosine, Kentucky, a town of 400, September 13th, 1911. With his group the "Blue Grass Boys" he gave definition to a style of music that eventually took its name from the group.

Queen Margrethe II of Denmark has taken over from Princess Diana as colonel in chief of the Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment in Kent. She is the regiment's only royal patron following the recent royal divorce and Princess Diana's resignation as colonel in chief.

Queen Margrethe, who has been the regiment's allied colonel in chief since 1992, spent just six hours with her troops.

Marianne Faithfull (49) has had her new album, 20th Century Blues, excluded from the classical music charts.

Released last week, it was expected to go straight into the top 20 list, but Chart Information Network said it is not suitable. The album features cover versions of songs by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, including Mack the Knife and Mon Ami, My Friend.
