A 61-year-old man died when he was struck by a car in Limerick today.

A 61-year-old man died when he was struck by a car in Limerick today.

He was hit on Roxboro Road at about 2pm. The man was taken to Limerick Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A Garda statement said the road was closed earlier to facilitate an examination by Garda forensic collision investigators but it had since re-opened.

A total of 191 people had died on the State's roads this year up to Friday morning, according to Garda statistics.  The Garda has been implemented extra traffic enforcement operations this bank holiday weekend.
