A number of peat fires that broke out in the counties of Offaly, Westmeath and Longford are now "mostly under control", Bord na Móna has said.

Up to 200 workers from the company are believed to have been involved in efforts to put out the fires, which broke out spontaneously due to the recent bout of hot weather.

Fire services from all three counties are also involved in the effort.

A spokeswoman for Bord na Móna said she did not have full information on the numbers of workers involved in trying to extinguish the fires but she said they were now "mostly under control".

Some fears were expressed earlier about the safety of residents in Rooskey, Co Roscommon, due to a serious fire on nearby bogland. Hundreds of tonnes of peat have been destroyed in some areas due to the fires.

One family was evacuated from their home near Lanesboro, Co Longford last night as a precautionary measure.

Bord na Móna has asked any residents who fear they may be in danger from the fires to contact the company so it can arrange alternative accommodation.
