A leading critic of Mr David Trimble today warned it is not acceptable for political parties and governments to do nothing about the crisis in the North's peace process.
With 24 hours to go before his party's showdown on the future of power sharing, Mr Jeffrey Donaldson called on fellow Ulster Unionists to protect the integrity of the political institutions by taking action against parties linked to paramilitaries.
The Lagan Valley MP said: "The status quo is not an option. We are about protecting the democratic integrity of the political institutions." He confirmed he would produce a strategy tomorrow before delegates.
"There are people who accuse us of wanting to pull everything down. I refute that. But the rules are there and the rules are being broken by the paramilitaries, by the terrorist organisations and by their political representatives and when rules are broken, you have to deal with those who are breaking the rules".
Mr Donaldson sounded his warning despite Mr Trimble's claim that a new independent paramilitary ceasefire monitor offered a clear strategy for unionists to ensure republicans abided by their ceasefire.
Tomorrow there will be a crucial meeting of the 860-member Ulster Unionist Party's ruling council. The meeting has been called by anti-Agreement unionists determined to force an end to power-sharing with republicans over alleged IRA ceasefire breaches.
