A major Government package for the troubled Moyross area of Limerick city will be announced in coming days, it emerged tonight.

Proposals on social, economic and policing initiatives were approved by the Cabinet at its weekly meeting today.

The package was brought forward by the Taoiseach and the Tanaiste in conjunction with Environment Minister Dick Roche and Community and Rural Affairs Minister Eamon O Cuiv.

A Government spokesperson said that Mr Ahern may visit the Moyross area to personally unveil the package at the weekend or early next week.

Mr Ahern visited Moyross earlier this month when he met community representatives and called at the Moyross Enterprise Centre.

Violence between feuding gangs in the area escalated in recent weeks with a number of shooting incidents.

Gardai later made arrests after seizures of weapons and ammunition in the suburb.

In September, a six-year-old girl and her four-year-old brother suffered severe burns after an arson attack on the car in which they were sitting.
