MORE THAN 500 budding young writers were honoured in Galway yesterday at a ceremony transmitted live on the internet.

All the wordsmiths, aged between five and 12, received awards for composing, writing, illustrating and binding their own books.

They each received a certificate and a commemorative medal as a reward for their hard work.

The ceremony formed part of the 10th annual Write a Book awards, which were held at the city’s Radisson Hotel.

The children received their prizes in two ceremonies, one in English and one in Irish. The winners were picked from a pool of 6,000 entries by a panel of literary experts.

“The ongoing success of this programme can be credited to our fantastic teachers,” said Bernard Kirk, director of the Galway Education Centre.

“The standard of work produced for this year’s awards has been remarkable.”
