Russia has urged the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) to step in to protect civilians in Northern Ireland from harm following the breakdown in the peace process.

"While understanding the efforts undertaken by the British and Irish authorities to stabilise the situation and find a long-term solution to this problem, the Russian side nevertheless considers it helpful to get the OSCE involved in the Northern Ireland settlement," said a statement issued in London.
